( From our own Correspondent J Dunedin, July 10th. A domestic servant, named AHca Burnaby, has committed suicide at Wellington by taking " Rough on rats." The 'floods in North Canterbury have subsided; but considerable damage has been done in some places to the railway lines and to the land through scouring. It is also feared that many cattle have been drowned. The weather is still unsettled. The Colonial Bank declares a dividend of 7 per cent. The profits for the halfyear were £17,718, and £1,000 is added to the reserve fund and £2,718 carried forward. The Waterloo Cup was won by Mr Digby's Ringwood, the Purae by Mr Kerr's Erica, and the Plate by Mr Dalgleish'a Market Day. 'At a special meeting of the Clutha County Council to-day, resolutions were passed that the only method of insuring "assured finance" to local bodies was by relieving rateable property of Colonial taxation, so that it could contribute as much as it can afford to local, purposes ; that the present method of auditing and electing Chairmen is the best; that no alteration in the Counties Act is desirable until the wishes of the ratepayers are ascertained. The Hon. Thos Dick is stated to be a likely candidate for Bruce. The Manufacturers 1 Association has received a telegram from the Premier, in reply to one expressing sympathy for the rejection of the tariff, in which he says : " Our first intention was to resign unconditionally ; but, at the urgent solicitation of our friends, we have agreed to withdraw the tariff and retain office, t thank your Association for its sympathy, ■ arid I need not state that our proposals were defeated believing, as I do, that unless our industries increase our lookout is not encouraging." Wellington, July Bth. Samples of the cartridge-cases to be used in the manufacture of cartridges in Auckland have been received here. They aid much superior to the cases used in the imported make of cartridges, and have the advantage that they can be re-filled. The trial of the rapid-firing Hotchklss gun will be made on Saturday afternoon. It is not intended to experiment with tho heavy guns, as it is inadvisable to use the ammunition at present in stock until the ahipments on order have been shipped.
