Lallemand and Ricord, in France, and Acton, in England, were for years cried down by their medical brethren. Now and for many years past they hare been looked up to and quoted by every man who pretends 1 to have any knowledge of the particular branch of the profession which these gentle* men specially devoted themselves to. It was the same with Erasmus Wilson, the 11 Skin Doctor," recently knighted by Her Majesty. Years since, it was the same with Dr L. L. Smith, of Melbourne, who practised (as did Lallemand and Ricord) as a Specialist. In all cases of diseases and habits which produce symptoms of Nervous Affections, of Skin Eruptions, of Prostration, and make human beings invirile, or which unfit them to carry on the purposes of their being, or which demonstrates itself, on the other hand, in Eruptive Diseases and Secondary forms of Affections. In all of these cases, how necessary it is to have the Specialist who has devoted his whole lifetime to the studying and practising in this one branch of hit profession ? Hence, now, after so many years, all minutiae are familiar to him, and symptoms which (it is not unreasonable to suppose) may not strike the General Practi* tioner at once, now from constant practice . and observation make Dr L, L. Smith master of the subject. j The medical Profession — that is, the more j liberal-minded of them— have likewise recog* | nised this fact, and Specialists now in every branch — oculists, aurists, syphilic, mental diseases, chest diseases, and in fact every portion of the human frame, has now some member of the profession who devotes his time to that and to none other. For in* stance, the " chest doctor " would on no account attend an accouchement, and the oculist would, not think of setting a broken leg ; but each would advise his patient to go to that doctor who is most famed for treating the disease requiring special skill. Dr L. L.
