ROXBURGH.
The monthly services of the Anglican Church were held yesterday. The^Rev. Mr Olinttiri^bF'Glyde) officiated at the evening service. The Church was well filled by an attentive congregation. . ; ; At the last meeting of the Athenaeum Committee; an enquiry, was made by a representative of the Salvation Army as to the terms of hire of the hall. It was decided to grant the use of the building to the Army at the . rate of 7s 6d per night,, on such nights as it was not occupied by the present tenants. It was mentioned that the hall could be obtained four or five nights a week. A substantial stone fence is in course of erection around the Presbyterian Church. The part of the fence bounding Scotland-street is to consist of iron palisades, with gates of the same material. The businessmen complain of the dulness of trade and the scarcity of money. If one may judge from the number of Lawrence firms who come up here for orders, I should say that your town is worse than ours in that respect. The annual nomination of Councillors to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of Crs Grover, Rees, and Woodhouse takes place next week. As is usually the case, little or no interest is likely to be taken in the affair by the ratepayers. The fact is that anyone who has the slightest ambition can obtain a seat at the Ceuncil-table. lam inclined to think that if ladies were eligible as Councillors that possibly we should have more candidates coming forward for civic honors. Our street lamps are a decided improvement on the former state of^tlwnga. Pedestrians are now afforded 4fa tunity of avoiding the pools, wfiiich are numerous both on our streets an!d footpaths. If the centre of the maira, street were to receive a good layer of gravel, the water, not finding a lodgment there, would be forced into the channels. The improvement to the street would be decided. There is to be no lack of amusements here during the next few weeks. The Ettrick Nigger Troupe give an entertainment on behalf of the Tuapeka Hospital in our Athenaeum on Thursday evening ; and the following week a concert is to be- ; given by the Coal Creek Quadrille Club in aid of. the funds of the local school. The anniversary of the Foresters' Court takea place at an early date. The Clutha River still keeps at a level, which allows the respective claims to be worked to advantage. It is said that two or three claims at Roxburgh East are at present pay ing'remarkably good dividends. To all appearances, the same run of gold will be found, across the flat at Roxburgh East extending to the foot of the range. 25th August, 1884.
