THE RABBIT NUISANCE QUESTION

TUAPEKA WEST.

Pursuant to announcement, a public meeting of settlers was held in the'Schoolhouse, Tuapeka West, last Wednesday evening. The meeting was fairly represented by the farmers of the district. Mr D. M'lntosh, who was voted to the chair, called upon Mr Hickson (Rabbit Inspector) to explain the object of the meeting. The Inspector said his object was to get the settlers to unite and take combined action in laying phosphorised \ grain for the destruction of the rabbit pest on a date to be fixed by the meeting. He would recommend the appointment of a Vigilance Committee to assist him in the endeavor to get all the settlers to start poisoning operations air the same time. He had in his hand a paper, which he would ask all to sign who were willing to take action simultaneously, for the suppression of the rabbit pest. — Messrs M'Gillivray, Sheehan^Mullins, J.,Fahey, T. E. Williams and others addressed the, meeting. — In answer to a question, the Inspector said he had made arrangements 1 for the reserves to be attended to. — It was proposed by Mr John Smith, and seconded by Mr J, Galbraith, junr. :

<r That the date for laying phoaphorised grain in the Tuapeka West district be fixed for Tuesday, 3rd June." Carried. — Resolved, on the motion of Mr John Smith, seconded by Mr Forbes Shepherd : "That a Vigilance Committee, consisting of the following six-named gentlemen, be appointed — viz., Messrs W. Osborne, J. Sheehan, D. M'lntosh, J. Stewart, J. Bulfin and Ohas. Mullins." — Mr Hickson moved a vote of thanks to the School Committee for the use of the school. The motion was seconded by Mr Henderson and declared carried.— A vote of thanks was also accorded to Mr Hickson for convening the meeting, and for the interest hehad manifested in endeavoring to suppress the rabbit nuisance.— -A vote of thanks was then passed to the Chairman and the meeting dispersed.
