(From our own Correspondent.) Dunbdin, January 26th. The residence of Mr Rutherford, M.H.R., at Kaitangata, was burned down on Wednesday. There is said to have been an insurance of only £50 on the building.
The Papakaio murder case was concluded to-day. His Honor summed up till about one o'clock, warning the jury that the case was a difficult one to decide. The jury were out about two hours, aud brought in a verdict of "Not Guilty" against Beattie, who was thereupon discharged.
An Auckland telegram states that the charge against Mr Gudgeon, late agent of the Union Bank at the Thames, for an attempted rape on Mrs Ehrenfried (wife of Mr Louisa Ehrenfried, the well-known brewer) was commenced to-day in the Supreme Court. The evidence for the prosecution was the same as that adduced at the Police Court. Seven witnesses are to be called for the defence.
A sad accident happened at Tokomairiro this morning to Patrick Walsh, proprietor of the Helensbrook flour-mills. His coat was caught by the shaft, which dragged him up, but he fortunately managed to lay hold of something, and held on till every article of clothing, with the exception of his socks, was torn in fragments from his body. He was much bruised and strained about the arms and chest. It is supposed that bis muscles have been torn. The poor fellow is also greatly injured between the legs. Drs Reid and Stewart have been in attendance, but cannot say at present if he has sustained any internal injury. It is reported that a murder has been committed at Happy Valley near Wakapuaka, Nelson Province. A man named Fuller laid an information against one Thompson for threatening to "do " for him, and Fuller was found shot this morning. No further particulars are to hand yet.
