ROXBURGH.
A sad accident happened t> a lad named White. It appears he was trying to get on the boat-swing (recently erected in the school grounds) when in motion, and broke his leg near the thigh joint. Dr Wallis was immediately called in, and, I believe, set the limb. We have been visited by the Rabbit Inspector from Tapanui during the past week. I believe he will require one or two assistants to see that the Rabbit Act of 1880 is complied with. The rabbits are quite as numerous as ever they were. Messrs Waugh and Ballantyne's thresh-ing-mill is now at work on the farms at Moa Flat, and both oat and wheat crops are turning out satisfactorily. The Roxburgh water-works are nearing completion. About three-quarters of a mile in length of mains has been laid with necessary fire plugs, valves, &c. The pressure in Scotland-street is sufficient to throw the water over the highest building in the town, so that in case of fire a hydrant with hose and all appliances required can be brought into use in a very short space of time. Some of the side streets have only small service-pipes laid on, which would not be of much use for putting out a fire. In mining matters, nothing new has transpired of late. The "Rise and Shine " party at the Pomahaka have not yet completed their tail-race. Our Licensing Committee have not yet chosen their Chairman, consequently no steps' have been taken under section 46 of the Licensing Act, 1881, re licenses being increased or otherwise.
