(From our own Correspondent. ) Dunedin, April 4th. The weather has been lovely to-day. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced this morning at Queenstown. Bishop Moran's reception to-day was i very cordial. A large number of people went to Port Chalmers to meet him. It is stated that a gift of one thousand sovereigns will be presented to him to-iiight from the Diocese. The "Auckland Star " to-day publishes the following : — " We are now in a position to indicate definitely the causes of the recent mysterious movements of Ministers. The stir is due to the serious dissensions in the Cabinet, with reference to Native aSairs. The differences have gone so far, that the Premier's resignation is threatened. It is still possible, however, that a complete rupture may be avoided." The Stewards of the Taranaki Jockey Club have disqualified the horse Randwick, his owner, and jockey for ever. John Elder, for the burglary in a Jeweller's shop at Port Chalmers, got two years' imprisonment. — Frank Oliver, the pedestrian, for stealing at Oamaru, six months. — Gilbert M'Coll, for larceny at Hillend, seven years. A gaol-warder and prisoners from the prison-hulk at Port Chalmers had a narrow escape from drowning last night, through the boat upsetting. They swam back, and after being in the water two hours, reached Goat Island. The San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland to-day. At the enquiry on the Waitaki-Koputai collision to-day, one witness gave important evidence. He said he was in the Waitaki's engine-room at the time, and saw the indicator pointing " Go astern," but heard Moffat (the second Engineer) say, "My God ! we have been going ahead all the time." The enquiry is adjourned. The Church of England manse at Timaru has been burnt down. The following is the latest cablegram to hand : — London, April 3rd. The Civil Engineers entertained Sir Henry Parkes at a dinner to-day. Sir Henry, replying, predicted an amazing growth for Australia in future. He expressed the belief that the Colonies would continue to cling to the Mother Couutry, and maintain the integrity of the Empire.
