OPENING OF ROAD M'CLELLAND'S THROUGH BLOCK X., BENGER DISTRICT.
At the evening sitting of the Council, Mr Mervyn moved, and Mr Tubman seconded — "That a sum not exceeding £500 be spent on opening the road from M'Clelland's corner, through block x., Benger district, and that the Engineer be instructed to ascertain if any arrangements can be made with M'Clelland for the right of roadway through his land." In speaking to the motion, Mr Mervyn said there was a Bum of £381 now at the credit of these blocks, which would soon be received from the Colonial Government. He would like to have these sums planed to a separate account — that is to a trust account, so that the money received for a certain purpose would be devoted to that purpose. In order to get a good track, it will be necessary to have a deviation through M'Clelland's land. The money, as the Council are aware, ia de-ferred-payment money.
Mr Brown asked if it was not a usual thing to get the consent of the Waste Land Board for the expenditure of the deferred-payment moneys. Mr Mervyn understood that the Board had approved of the expenditure. The Chairman remarked that the money had not yet been received. It was really, he thonght, carrying the game too far, and he was* sure the people outside would laugh at them if they went on like this. , Mr Mervyn did not like to bore the Council with the matter; but he would like the Engineer to be called in. The estimate of the cost was that gentleman's. Mr Brown thought this money would come from a separate vote, and would suggest the sum of £400.
Mr Mervyn would accept the amendment.
Mr Bennet supported the motion as amended. He was strongly under the imprestion that this' is a Government work, and that the Government would do it. He was quite agreeable that the sum of £400 should be expended upon it, or perhaps £20 more.' Mr Herbert supported the motion, which was carried on the voices.
