CRICKET MATCH.
Lawrknck versus Balclutha.
A match which has been some time on the books was played at Tokomairiro on Saturday last between the above clubs. The reason for playing the match at [Tokomairiro, which is about midway between Lawrence and Balclutha, was on account of the distance, and the method adopted of meeting half-way proved most successful. Both teams went by coach j and arrived at Milton- about 10 o'clock. After breakfast some time was spent in , arranging preliminaries. The game was commenced about 11 o'clock. .Mr Downes, winning the toss, elected to send the Clutha men first to the wicket, when they were disposed of for the very small total of 36, of which the captain (Mr Ferguson, 18), who has a fine free style, was the only one who reached double figures. The bowling was shared by Messrs Hunter, Downes, and Morrison, the two latter both showing a fine average. The fielding of the Lawrence men was exceptionally good, very few chances being missed. On going in for their first innings the Lawrence men were very successful, owing chiefly to the big score of Mr Downes (82, Bot out), the total reaching 337. Mr Downes played a fine free innings without giving a chance. There is not now much doubt but that the President's trophy for the highest batting average will go to Mr Downes, this being the fourth big ■core he has made this season. Although no other double figures were obtained nearly all the team managed to score, the only " duck's egg " obtained being through ' an unfortunate run out. The Clutha men are evidently deficient in the bowling department. Seven different changes were made during the innings. The fielding .was very fair, M'Pherson and Hewlings especially picked up and returned well. At the end of the Lawrence first innings both clubs adjourned for lunch to Mr F. Bastings' White Horse Hotel, where an excellent cold collation was provided, ilr Downes, in a few pithy remarks, explained the difficulty experienced by the two clubs in meeting each other owing to the distance apart, but he hoped that now they had been enabled to meet once, a match between them would become an annual affair. He felt certain good-will existed between the two clnbs, and he called on the Lawrence men to give their opponents three hearty cheers, which was well responded to. Mr Ferguson, in thanking the Lawrence men for their hearty expression of goodwill, atttributed their own defeat, which so far appeared Inevitable, to bad luck. They had the talent, but it wanted drawing out.— (Laughter.) They had now been enabled to meet, and he hoped that should he have to resign the post of Captain through leaving the district, a worthy successor would be found to carry on the annual match with their opponents. He then called on the Clutha men to give three cheers for the Lawrence team. This met with a hearty response. On resuming play, the Clutha men, in their second innings, were not much more successful than in their first, the score only reaching 59. Phillips 16, Hewlings 14, and Spence 11, each obtained double figures by careful play. The Lawrence men thus won their second match this season by one innings and 42 runs. Although there was a fair pitch, the ground was scarcely large enough, and several boundary hits got a number of runs that would not otherwise have been obtained. A very pleasant day was spent by all, and the Lawrence men are to be congratulated on having acquitted themselves most creditably. The weather was favorable, and all seemed in good spirits, and the ride from Tokomairiro was very enjoyable. We hope this' annual match may be kept up. That unique journal, the Lyell" Argus " has changed hands, and the premier journalist of tfce polonies has bpen lost to Jfew gealand, Whether the late owner, pjlitor, .and what not, has left for the "fields occupied by the " Jiost tribe of the Children of Israel," further in the interior the new proprietor does not inform his readers. The present sheet though only the same size as that brought out by the •" Prince," has a more pretentious appearance, and shows that a tradesman is "running" the venture, and the Lyell people will no doubt, give increased sapport to their loo^l organ.
