Correspondence.

MINE MANAGEMENT. [To the Editor.)

Sir, — In a letter in your issue of November 26th Mr Quick Eoaeh, mine manager, defied anyone to prove that he was incompetent as a mine manager, and also stated that he was determined to let nothing pass without replying where he was interested in the least degree. Having the least possible opinion of Mr Quick Roach's abilities in that respect, I ventured to pass a few strictnres on his management of the Tuapeka claim, asking him courteously to give an explanation. To a qualified mine manager, it afforded an excellent opportunity of advertising his abilities and showing the shareholders that he was the right man in the right place. In his letter of the 6th inst., the inflated style of which has seldom been equalled in your columns, he wishes me to understand that he never writes anything he is ashamed to put his name to. Very candid, Mr Quick Roach ! In the columns of a newspaper, it would be awkward to explain, and might bring about a further exposd. But he states that if I call on him and tender him a professional foe, he will initiate me in the first principles of his profession. Sir, I beg leave to decline consulting Mr Quick Roach. There have been several self styled " Professors " visiting New Zealand lately who, for a " professional fee," would impart valuable information ; and many of the credulous consulted them, and found to their grief that they had been dupes of professional quacks — only quacks, and nothing more. To mining com panics in general I would say, Look out for a manager who has graduated in Victoria or New Zealand, and it is probable you may get the " genuine article," But, of the bearers of references from Patagonia or Kamschatka, beware. — I am, &c.

A Wetiieestones Miner. Bth December, 1879.
