THE "COURIER" REPORTER'S REPLY.

(To the Editor.)

Sic, — Mr Heriot writes you from Tapanui, complaining that his speech at the recent soiree was " cooked." This I deny, as that gentleman's speech was carefully reported, and although only a precis was published, every care was exercised that his utterances were substantially conect. Another representative of the '' Courier" who was also present at the soiree, vouches for the accuracy of the 1 report. I may state further, that some of Mr H.s remarks were considered as likely to do him injury amongst a certain denomination, and therefore expunged by the Editor. The Chairman of the meeting also saw the proof sheet, and was quite satisfied with it. Mr Heriot spoke from notes, and must therefore have a wonderful memory if he can recollect every word he uttered. I am, &c, "Cotteiee" Repoetee. Tapanui, 11th March. Human Nature is so constituted that what may be had without an effort, or without a proportionate disbursement is generally lightly esteemed. It is to be hoped that this principle will not find illustration in connection with the free education of our schools; but now that instruction can be had without cost, that every child in the laud will obtain such an education as will place it in a position to commence the realities of life under more favorable advantages than the generation now doing the world's work. Abolition of school fees will take a strain and tension off the week's earnings of many bread winners in the land. The exchequer forbids us going so far in clothing the boys to attend school, but we have made a compromise by reducing the cost to the Minimum, as a visit to the CuTTiira Warehouse will amply prove.
