DEMOCRATIC SNOBBERY.

We clip the following from the Melbourne "Argus "of 30th January :— The " Bendigo Advertiser " complains that " on Saturday evening he 7,15 train from Sandhurst for Melbourne arrived at Castlemaine in good time, but the passengers were unnecessarily delayed there 20 minutes. The Chief Secretary, accompanied by Mr Farrell, M.L.A., and other gentlemen, were at Castlemaine, waiting to return to Melbourne, and, although there was plenty of room in the first-class carriage, orders were given for the saloon carriage, in'which Mr Berry had travelled from Melbourne the previous day, to be attached for his special use. In order to do this one of the porters proceeded to detatch the guard's van, but he found Woods' patent break in the way, which he was unable to uncouple. The matter was reported to the station master, who then ordered the guard to do it, but that official, to the horror of the station master, stated that he was unable to do so. The engine driver was then sent for, but in the meantime one of the porters had done something to the break coupling which caused a jet of water to spurt out over him and other persons that were standing on the platform. By some means the van was at length uncoupled, the train shunted and the Chief Secretary's, state carriage added, and it waa run baok to the platform and attached io the van. Woods' continuous break was not, however, coupled to the extra carriage and the guard's van. As the train moved from the platform, some one called for three cheers fat Mr Berry, which was responded to by about 30 person*; but the cheera were drowned by the groans of the passengers, which were of a deep and lasting nature. At Kynetou, W e are informed that the appearance of the Chief Secretary was the signal for the passengers and others on the platform to greet him with loud boo-hooiv
