TESTIMONIAL TO Mr GREIG.
A meeting of the employees on Messrs. Greig and Goodfellow's railway contract was held at Chalmers' Halfway house on Friday evening last, for the purpose of presenting Mr. Thomas Greig with a handsome gold watch, as a token of their esteem for that gentleman. Mr. James Chalmers, who provided a splendid spread, occupied the chair, and opened the proceedings by a brief speech. Mr. John Edie then on behalf of the workmen presented the testimonial, and in doing so said that this small token of their regard, which he had so much pleasure in presenting, was the spontaneous gift of the men who had worked under Mr. Greig's directions, and who had always experienced the greatest consideration at his hands. Mr. Greig replied in a feeling and appropriate manner, after which several excellent songs were rendered by Messrs. Kelly, Gear, Stevenson, Hunter, and others. The proceedings wound np.in the." wee sma' hours," with the national anthem. The watch bears the following inscription :—": — " Presented to Thomas Greig, Esq., by the employees on the Tuapeka railway, as a token of their reßpect and esteem, March Ist, 1876."
