Tee petroleum industry has been unsuccessful in New Zealand so far. Some years ago a large sum of money was expended in the sinking of wells at Taranaki, but the various companies had to be wound up. Now we learn that the works of the Poverty Bay Petroleum Company have come .to a standstill, and that company is to be wound up. At one time the prospects of the company were very encouraging, but the favorable symptoms did not continue.
