PUBLIC MEETING AT BEAUMONT.

I* ■ ' " A. public meeting was held at the Crookston Hotel, Beaumont, on the erening of Friday, 18th December. Mr. Parsonß, baring been roted to the «h*ir, explained, the object of the meeting. They had met to petition the Gforermnent to throw open a block of land conrenient to the settler* on blocks one and four, as nearly all the land in the two blooks ia taken up ; and the Government would only be acting in a just manner if they granted the portion asked for between the two blocks, from the back corner of block four to the (Jorge saddle, and from block one to block four along the Teviot road. Mr. Lancaster said that he thought block one had the greatest claim, as all that block, with the exception of about 100 acres, was taken up ; but it was agreed that the settlen of both blocks should unite and petition the Government to throw open the block of land between blocks one and four, as that would be .convenient to the settlers in both blocks, jmd as most of block four was also occupied. ' It was then proposed by "Mr James Bennett, and; seconded by Mr. G. Rogers, " That in the opinion of this meeting, the Government, by carrying ' out the recommendation of the - Waste Lands Committee, and granting the petition of the settlers of Orookston and surrounding district, by throwing open for settlement 1100 -acres of land^on run 178, hare selected for that object one of the coldest and most barren pieces of country that could hare been found in the district, and completely isolated from nearly the whole of-the" settlers^ and. entirely' .unsuited for the object*' for which it was required. "2. That a respectful address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, explaining the object above referred to ; also, that nearly the whole of blocks one and four, Crookiton, are occupied, and the;, settlers hare nowhere ! to turn out their stock; and, pray that he -may be pleased to ! cause a block of country to be thrown open conreniently situated to the •ettlers of both blocks— (lie same as described on .former occasions. ' ' 'fS. , That a committee be appointed to cjftrrr out the- foregoing resolutions, consisting of the following gentlemen : — Messrs. James Bennett, B. Lancaster, J. Gamble, J. Parson*, J. Craig, J. Main, G. Rogers." ' The resolutions were carried, and a rote of thanks to the chair closed the proceedings.
