The annual Licensing Court for the town and district of Lawrence, will be held in the Courthouse, on the 21st instant. Tuapeka has been visited during the past few days by a cold wintry storm of wind. rain, and sleet, Wednesday night was a very wild one. It was pitch dark, and the wind was very^cold find squally. The sleet came down heavily, and towards morning vivid flashes of lightning illuminated the darkness every few seconds. On Thursday morning, the hills surrounding Lawrence were covered with snow, and the storm had but little abated. An elderly'man named Rogers was, yesterday, found dead on the ranges in the vicinity of Manuka Creek. We are informed that he was last seen alive at the Wool shed on the previous evening. On Saturday last, Mr. Watson handed us a vegetable marrow of a large size, grown in Mr. Sutherland's garden, Lisuiore-street, being one of twelve equally large ones from the same root. This is a very good testimony of the productiveness of the soil in and around Lawrence when proper attention is paid to the preparation of it. Mr. LancvSTEH informs- us that he has purchased a new -threshing machine to replace the one he lost by fire last week, and he hopes to have it at work iv the Teviot district in a few days, wheu he will be able to fulfil his engagements. The " Cromwell Argus " states that the last orushings— two weeks' -of the Star of the East-, yielded 85 ounces of gold from 160 tons of stone. It is said that an enterprising hotelkeeper in Dunedin pui poses erecting a hotel in a central part of the city to cost £40,000. The "Daily Times " Auckland correspondent writes : — The Hon; Mr. M'Lean, the Minister for Defence, has gone to Melbourne to negotiate the new oable and re-arrange the postal service.
