SPORTING NEWS.
The Dunstan spring meeting takes place on Friday, the 26th September. The programme is not yet in print, but will soon be published. Some of the local sporting men have horses in training for the various events, and there is every prospect of an excellent day's sport being provided. Tho Dunstan Jockey Club, at it 3 last meeting, disqualified Reay from riding or running any horse on the Dunstan racecourse. At a recent meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, presumably « packed meeting for the purpose, Reay's disqualification was removed, thus setting the ruling of other clubs at defiance, and in reality encouraging that class of men to swindle the public. The Atlas runningoff c.vac at the Tuapeka meetingis still fresh in the memory of many, and certainly deserved a heavy punishment. The Dunedin Club in its superior wisdom, or its wish to foster such practices, resolves to allow the man to again send his horses for public money. A match took place on the Beaumont racecourse on Monday last, between Mr. R. Lancaster's horse Dick Turpin and Mr. Wm. Draper's Toby, the owner of Dick Turpin laying £25 to £15. ' Both horses came to the post at the appointed time. The betting was 2t03 on Dick Turpin, and he did not disappoint his backers, as he won the race easily. The winner was ridden by Mr. Matheson. After the above event a sweepstake was got up, for which five entries were secured. Mr,. J. Davison's Professor filly, ridden by C. Monaghan, won, beating the field in good style. The present match arose out of a previous one run on the same course a short time ago, when Mr. Lancaster's horse, ridden by Charles Monaghan, beat Mr. Wm. Pine's horse Brown Tommy, ridden by T. Monaghan ; and afterwards defeated Toby easily, who was only taken off the grass that morning.
