our own Correspondent.) The -Bald Hill Flat races look place on the 17th instant, and were an unqualified success. The weather was unexceptionable; the attendance large; and the competition for the various prizes good. The stewards did their duty ably and well ; the programme was carried out to the "letter, and those present expressed * themselves well j satisfied with the day's proceedings. Mr. M'Ginnis performed the duties of judge impartially and with ability ; Mr. Tohill as 'starter, could not be found the least fault with ; and the clerk of the course was übiquitous. The course was in capital condition, for which the club is indebted to Mr. Hugh Cros&au, who went to considerable trouble, and spent a good deal of time in clearing. Several other gentlemen are also entitled to praise for their active exertions towards promoting the success of the first Bald Hill Flat race meeting. The following are the details :—: — Maiden* Plate of 10 soys, Lyncli's Maori I Carroll's Jeiry 2 Jenkin'sMay Queen 3 Three others entered. Maori started oft* with tho lead and was never caught. Bald Hill Flat Handicap of 15 soys. Rivers' Wild Manx Boy ' 1 "Wilkin's Kathleen 2 M'Phersou's Swindle 3 „ Gamecock 0 When the flag dropped, the latter assumed first place, but speedily caved in, and afterwards enjoyed a good view of the race. Ladies Pukse of 7 soys. Lyncli's Maori 1 M'Ginnis' Yankee 2^_ Crossan's Blackbird 3 The first named, on the signal being given, started off and showed the way all round. District Handicap of 12 soya, Wilkin's Kathleen 1 Carroll's Judy Callaghan 2 Jenkiu's Devonshire Lass 3 A well contested race between the first two. Farmers' and Miners' Purse. Lynch's Maori 1 Crossan's Blackbird 2 Wilkin's Kathleeu 3 Blackbird took the lead for about three-quarters of a unle, when Maori overhauled him, and won with some difficulty. Consolation Handicap of 10 soys. Carroll's Judy Callaghan 1 M'Pherson's Swindle 2 Hospital Race. This was an exciting contest between Rivers' Wild aux Boy and Gordon's Firetail. Both' steeds got the benefit of whip and spur, the former winning by a shade. A meeting of the Race Committee was held on the evening of the 18th, when the Secretary stated that after paying off all the liabilities, there was a "Balance in favor of the club of £7. There is great talk in Bald Hill Flat about the construction of a Sludge Channel Companj'. Mr. Hugh Crossan has made a proposal to allow the proposed race pass through his land, and Mr. J. E. Kemp is about to follow suit. On Mr. Kemp's intentions beiug made known, a public meeting will be called. A race took place on the 21st inst., at Bald Hill Flat, between Scott's /Tommy and King's Nelly for £5 a-side, the former winning easily. Mining matters are rather dull at present, owing to the scarcity of water, but when the autumn rains fall no doubt there will be an improvement. The Hit or Miss Company have arranged with Felix, and are about removing their plant on his ground. If the prospects may be any criterion, handsome results may be expected. A brass band ia about to be formed in Alexandra. £33 has already been subscribed towards' the purchase of instruments. The ."new S.teain Dredge Company is creating great excitement bore. Many shares have been subscribed for in the town, and a great number are being taken up outside. About the success of the undertaking, there cau be no question.
