PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

Mr. Bathgate's resolutions with reference to the University were carried unanimously. Some slight additions to three or four of the clauses of the Land Resolutions were made. TheOfcago Roads Bill was read a third time and passed. The Sheep Ordinance, 1866, (Southland), Repeal Bill was also read, a third time and passed. The House went into Committee of Supply on the Payment to Members Bill, when Mr. J. C. Brown moved an" amendment to clause 11, to the effect-that-country members should receive a sum not exceeding -20s. per cliemduring aach session of the present. Council, together with travelling ex-r J penses, and that town members should receive a sum not exceeding 10s. per diem, a day's allowance for every day of non-attendance being deducted.; After discussion the amendment was carried on a division by 17 to 11. Mr. Shepherd moved, " That an address be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, requesting that he will cause to be placed on the Supplementary Estimates the sum of £200, for the erection of a lock-up* at Roxburgh." The motion was lost. Mr. M'Glashan moved, " That an address be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, requesting that the sum of £861 ss. be placed on the Supplementary Estimates, with the view of meeting the expenses of the Police Department as originally placed on the Estimates." The motion was lost. Mr. J. C. Brown, in the absence of Mr. Bastings, moved, " That an address be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, request-
ing that the sum of £250 be placed on the Supplementary Estimates, for the construction-of a uoad Jroin Do.chert\r!j» Hotel to.Fija&e raid's afore, i_ payment for such work to be paid in-land,- under •lause 51 of the "Ot!\go W lW te Lands Act.'" Carried, Mr.- -Shepherd moved, in the absence of Mr. Hickey, " That in address be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, requesting him to cause to be placed on the Supplementary Estimates the sum of £300, for the formation of a bridle track from Cromwell Bridge to Quartz Reef Point, such work to be paid for in land, under clause 51 of the ' Otago Waste Lands Act.' " Carried. Mr. G. F. C. Browne moved, " That an address be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, requesting that he will cause the sum of £300 to be placed on the Supplementary Estimates, for the maintenance of a road from Havelock through the main gully, Waitahuna, to a point known as Dewe's store ; paymeut of such work to be paid in land, under clause 51 of the ' Otago Land Act.' " The motion was lost.
