ENTIRE STOCK ON THE GOLDFIELDS COMMONAGES.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — I wish to direct your attention and that of the public to a matter of great importance to the cattle owners of this district, namely, the fact that a large number of bulls are allowed to run ar large on the Tuapeka Commonage, most of them being a lot of miserable scrubbers, scarcely tit for conversion iuto beef. This, no doubt, in a great measure, accounts for the wretched rubbish of cattle with which our commonage is crowded, and which are taking, up the room of good cattle, although thuy will never fatten. Mr Pillans tho other flay at the Clurha sold a lot of cattle, some of which realised L2O per head ; but it would be difficult to find a mob of cattle in this district which would command such a price, which shows the necessity for weeding out the scrubbers referred to. T think all bulls ought to be confined in paddocks, and that all owners of entire stock above six mouts old who allow such cattle to go at large on the goldtields should be heavily fined. Mr M'Kay at one time started to put them in the Tuapeka Pound, but afterwards dropped it, for some reason or other. 1 think the cattle owners of this district should club together and take steps to remedy the evil, for they have the law on their side, j I should like to see an abler pen than mine take up this matter, for there is plenty of room to work on. — I am, tfec, Cattle Owner. Tuapeka, May 16, 1871.
