MR. REID AT THE BLUE SPUR.
On Monday afternoon Mr. R-iid addressed a large meeting in the schoolroom, Blue Spur. Notwithstanding the rain winch was literally pouring down at tbe hour of meeting, the large room was filled to over> flowing.
On the motion of Mr. W. D. Morrison, seconded by Mr. Nicoli, Mr. M'Lelland ' was unanimously called upon to preside. Mr. Eeid addressed the meeting at great length, entering fully into all the subjects which were at present engaging public attention
At the clo^e of his address, several questions were asked. In reply to Mr. M.Kinhiy, Mr. Reid said he was nat in favour of free selection, but he would look favourably on a system of deferred payments. With reference to the survey of the Tuapeka Basin, that work had been done during the Yogel Government, and why that Q-o-vernment did not attempt to carry it into effect, he could not tell.
The question put by Mr. M'Kinlay, with reference to the sale of the Island Block, will be found satisfactorily answered in our resume of Sir. Eeid'a address in Lawrence. He was in favour of throwing open Mr. Smith's tun, if it was required. With regard to the crold duty, wliila he would bo in favour of a gradual reduction of the duty, the meeting must remember that trie revenue must be kept up. He thought there was a chance of the colony obtaining about three millions of the loan, but the probability of obtaining it was con. iiderably lessened by sending Mr. Yogel home to float it. He thought it was wrong to grant agricultural leases on the gold mining reserve. Other minor questions were asked, ;snd satisfactorily answered. Mr. W. D. Morrison then proposed that Mr. Keid is a fit and proper person for Superintendent. The motion was seconded by Mr. Manual, and carried.
Mr. Reid proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman, which was seconded by Mr. M'Kinlay, after which the meeting; broke up highly satisSed., with Mr. Eeid's address.
