THE LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

A meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening, the 9th inst. Present — Crs. Mears, ilarrop, Coverlid, and Harnett. Cr. Mears was called to the chair.

The minutes of meeting held on Dec, 12fcli were read and confirmed.

The only correspondence received was a letter from the uncler-secrotary for Lands and Works informing the Council that the gravelling of the road from the Hospital to the beginning of Mead and party's contract would be proceeded with at once, but the Government had not funds in hand to expend on that portion of the Beaumont road from Peel-street to Mr. Docherty's hotel.

Finance Report No. 5, amounting to £104 5^ 2d, was received and adopted.

A petition, numerously signed by ratepayers and owners of property in Ross Place, was presented to the Council. The petition set forth that the tailings at the mouth of Gabriels Gully were accumulating to such an extent that the course of the creek had changed, and the water was being steadily backed, on. the valuable properties situated in Ross Place. The petitioners asked the Council to represent the matter to the Government, that some preventative measure might be adopted.

The Chairman stated that the silting up aiid raising of Gabriels Creek had been more particularly observed within the last few weeks. The evil was a grow-

g one, the creek was rising rapidly, and unless some means were taken to form a channel, in the event of a flood, serious consequences might be the result both to life and property. It was decided to hold over the consideration of the petition to next meeting of Council.

On the motion of Cr. Coverlid, it was decided to have the two old bridges, which crossed Gabriels Creek, placed over the Wethers tones Creek at the crossing near Ross Place, to enable the school children to cross dryshod.

Tho Town Clerk was allowed a few days extra to prepare the Assessment Roll. Ho had not found the previous roll to bo so useful to him as he had anticipated, many sections having been placed to the credit of people to whom they did not belong.

The Chairman gave notice that at next Council meeting he would move ' ' That £5 be voted by this Council towards the funds of .the Tuapeka Hospital."

The Council then adjourned till Friday evening, the 13th inst., at half-past 8 o'clock. [The report of the adjourned meeting will appear in our next issue.]
