PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
A pressure of original matter upon our space precludes our giving a lengfche ted summary of the doings in the Council during .tiie past week. The following are the principal items of a local character which have l>een referred to. In another column will be found our Duneilin correspondent's le'ter, and also an article titled " Note 3on the Provincial Council," which, together, will give our readers a better i.tea of what is being done than long reports of dreary speeches :—: — MESSAGES. Message No. 2 was received from the Superintendant. transmitting communications from the General Government with respect to the following works proposed to be carried out under the provisions of the Public Works and rmmigration Act, 1870, viz. : Ist, the survey of a line of railway from Tokomair.ro to Lawrence, and the supply of water for auriferous lands i.i the Tuapeka district ; 2nd, a water supply for the Wakatipu golddelds ; 3rd, the construction of the (southern Trunk Railway. THE GOLDFJELDS. Mr. Brown asked the Government — " What steps they have taken towards^ throwing open certain blocks of land for^ settlement on the gold fields, in accordance with the instructions of this Council last session ?" Mr. Reid explained that blocks had not been proclaimed at Roxburgh East, >'oa Flat, or Xaseby. At Black 3 two Hundreds had been recommended — JJun 244, 13,000 acres, and Hun 261, 20,000 jicres. At Hyde a new Hundred, 4250 a;res, had been recommended ; at Macraes one of 19,0"00 acres had been recommended ; in Run 345 two blocks had been cancelled ; in Run 109, 2500 acres, and in Run 244, 2500 acres, had been cancelled. BRIDGES. Mr. 1 1 ay asked the Secretary for Land and Works if it was the intention of the Government to erect uridges across the stream at Evans Flat, Pomahaka Crossing, and W hiding Creek (.^witzers) ? Mr. Heid said it was the intention of the Government to erect bridges across the streams referred, to. He also mentioned the preparations which were being made to carry out the work. ROADS. Mr, Hay risked the Secretery for Land and Works if it ia the intention of. the Gov^rnmenr. to proceed with title formation of tho road -between tho Woolshed and fclavelock, and when ? Mr. Keid said that it wa3 the intention of the Government to proceed with the
work indicated as soon as tho revov.e | would justify it. Men had been employed v <>n the road on account <f t^e h;ud winter, and the lack of employment. COURTHOUSE, ROXBURGH. Mr. l.'eid moved that an Address be presented to His Honour the uperint&n-^ dent, recommending that section 5, block J, Koxbiirgh, be sat apart as a site for a Courthouse. Carried.
