TOTAL ABSTINENCE
(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.J
Sir, — The more I watch the total abstinence movement in this district the more I feel convinced that i*-s wellwishers will not make it a complete success unless they altogether dissociate it from religion. The movement in this district is almost a purely religious one, and no greater proof of it was shown than by two or three of the speakers at the soiree held here last week. Whatever people's religion may be, has nothing to do with the total abstinence movement, and I can't see the object of a man standing up at a meeting and quoting scripture in support of total abstinence. The cause is a good one, and recommends itself, but if it is made a religious movement, its power for good will be immediately weakened. — I am, &c, A Total Abstainer. Teviot, November 8, 1870.
