WAITAHUNA ENTERTAINMENT ON BEHALF OF THE BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir,— On Thursday, 13th inst., the ladies of this district gave an entertainment in aid of the funds of the Benevolent Asylum, which was a great success. The curtain roSe to that soul stirring chorus " King the bell, watchman," which was very beautifully rendered and loudly applauded, after which Mrs. Hicks sang " The Queen's Letter," and receiving an encore substituting the song of " Pulling hard against the stream." During the evening that lady sang some other well selected melodies in her usual graceful manner. Mrs. Wootton also sang very tastefully. The Misses Clark, of Lawrence, were very much applauded — one for that beautiful song, " Father come home," and the other for a recitation, the name of which I did not hear. Mrs. Goodma"n read a piece titled " The woman and her three cows," and it was done so well that the audience were kept in one continued roar of laughter. Mrs. Johnstone and Mrs. Olson gave some admirable readings. Messrs. Cook, O'Keefe, Tranter, and other gentlemen, sang some excellent songs during the evening. Mr. Fincheiyfrom the Canada Quartz Reef, played. a duet on two- tin whistles, and being vociferously encored substituted a comic melody. The "National Anthem" was then sung, after which the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up until early dawn. Mr. O'Keefe managed the whole afiair in a very efficient manner, Mr. Burton presiding at harmonium. At a public meeting held on Friday, 21st inst., it was resolved that the sum realised bj r the above entertainment, viz., £32, be forwarded to the secretaiy,.Mr. Webb, and that Mrs. Cook be elected a Life Governor of the institution. Trusting you will give this a space in your columns. — 1 am, &c, J. G. A. Bayliss.
