“Solomon” Ryan.
You may remember the Biblical story of two women who came to King Solomon to adjudicate, when each claimed to be the mother of the same child. His apt suggestion of slitting the infant into two equal parts rather ended the argument, and made it plain which was the rightful claimant, writes a Melbourne golfer. Not quite as drastically, but absolutely as definitely, “ Mick ” R} r an settled an argument at Riversdale on June 3. Stan Newman, last year’s captain, maintained that he had lost a ball to the present captain, Roy Anderson. Anderson asserted that he had not been a party to the bet, and sturdily refused to accept the pill. Newman asserted that when he entered into a contract, even if the other party had doubts about it, he invariably “ followed through.” Then entered “ Solomon ” Ryan. Firmly appropriating the pair of them with a shoulder grip they could not resist, Ryan put it this way to Anderson : “ Roy, if j-ou considered you owed a man something, would you pay It?” “I certainly would,” admitted Anderson. “ Even if it was Stan?” asked Ryan with a Celtic rather than “Solomon” twinkle. “ Even,” capitulated Anderson. “ Well, Stan reckons he owes you a ball.” I might add that a ball costs 3s. but a visit to the 19th costs—what? After all the loser, and the “ Solomon ” won.
