TO RAISE £30,000.
Ambitious Sumner Plan for Beach Improvements. A challenge has been issued to Timaru and New Brighton by Sumner shopkeepers with a proposal to raise £30,000 for beach improvements. The matter came before the Sumner Borough Council at its meeting last evening in the form of a petition presented on behalf of 20 shopkeepers in the district. The plan involves the erection of floodgates in the estuary to retain the sea; a stone bridge is proposed between Sumner and South New Brighton, and an extensive children’s playground is An eleven days’ gala at Christmas and extensive collecting are the means suggested of raising the money. The council decided to ask a deputation to wait on it.
