I A GOOD JOKE. . Acting for a Melbourne sportsmar 0 the “ Australian Trotting Record ' 5 wrote to a well-known breeder who was t ’ attending. Mr J. Munro’s sale instruct y ing him to buy a brood mare. The letter, however, arrived too late, anc |_ the commission was not executed. Ir the meantime the following wire t reached the editorial den: “ Securer: a mare two guineas, not in foal, sighi a affected slightly. Month’s free agist , ment.” Had the wire been relayed tc the prospective buyer he would have j torn his hair, if any, and vented his j feelings at being dumped with a barj ren mare, the freight of which to Melbourne would have been a fair sum. However, the letter that followed explained everything, and regret expressed that a good chance of getting a ’ bargain at the sale missed. - WILL REACH TOP CLASS, * Te Kahu won his fifth race in nine ' starts when he led the field home in ’ the> Stewards’ Handicap at Epsom on Saturday. Fie also has one second and [ one third to his credit. He is only . four years old and is a bay gelding . bon, who was a brilliant pacer in her day, but she was not a genuine race- ' mare. Te Kahu has competed in four races this season for three firsts and one third, and he gives evidence of reaching the best class among horses 1 of his gait. He is a member of J. T. ' Paul’s team at Mangere. and is owned ' by Mr J. T. Young, who bred him. Te Kahu is a half-brother to Pegaway 3min 19 l-ssec, Lislea 2min 54 2-ssec, Nellota 2min 59sec, and Superfine.
