Police Say He Fired on Them First. United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—* Copyright. LOS ANGELES, June 22. Mr Fred W. Friedl, aged 40 years, vice-president of the Pacific Coast Marine Federation, which was active in the recent tanker strike, was shot and killed in an encounter in the San Pedro Harbour district with police who went to his apartment to search for arms. Police officers said that Mr Friedl fired and that they replied with a sawn-off shotgtin. Mr Friedl was struck in the face and neck, and died almost instantly. The police said they found an automatic pistol, two shotguns and two rifles in Mr Friedl’s room, in addition to the pistol that he carried.
