OBITUARY.

Death Occurs of Mrs Bridget Joyce. • Mrs Bridget Joyce, for many years an esteemed resident of Loburn. died on June 17 at the age of 96. She was born in Kilcirriff, County Galway, Ireland. and with her husband, the late Mr Thomas Joyce, arrived at Lyttelton in the ship Roman Emperor about March, 1864. Going to Rangiora the couple found employment with Messrs Hey wood and of the Bannerdown Estate, Fernside. Two years later Mr Joyce / purchased land in Loburn to settle on, but subsequently entered the employ of the late Mr P. C. Thrclkeld, of Inglewood, Flaxton. for \tfhom the couple carried on the dairying on the estate for many years. Eventually Mr and Mrs Joyce settled at Loburn. where Mr Joyce died 34 years ago. Mrs Joyce was an ardent supporter of the Roman Catholic Church at Loburn and Rangiora. having resided in Rangiora during the last few years of her life. Two of her daughters were Sister Anthony, who died at Akaroa. and Sister Zita: and her son. Mr John Joyce, is resident at North Loburn. Two of her grandsons are in the priesthood. the Rev Father J. Joyce, S.M., Marist missioner in Queensland. and the Rev Father E. Joyce, of Addington. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral which left her son’s residence. Kilcirriff, North Loburn. on Wednesday Tor the Loburn churchyard. The Rev Father E. Joyce conducted the services, assisted by the Rev Fathers Leen and Mackay. and several visiting priests. Mrs Alice Hewitt. Mrs Alice Hewftt, whose death occurred on Wednesday at her home in St Albans, at the age of 96. was a much travelled woman. At the age of 72 she made a trip from New Zealand to England, and in her younger days she travelled extensively in the East. She was born at Mansfield, Nottingham. on May 8. 1839. and when still a young woman went on a voyage to India in company' with Miss Gordon Cummings, a sister of the famous traveller. She was married in England in 1572 to Mr John Lewis Hewitt, and after their marriage they lived for a while in India and later in Japan, where Mr Hewitt was employed in the Government Service. They arrived in New Zealand 51 vears ago and lived in Dunedin, moving after some time to Christchurch. Mr Hewitt’s death occurred in Calcutta 44 years ago. Since that time Mrs Hewitt had lived in New Zealand in both the North and South Islands except for the interval when she went on her last trip to England. She had been settled in Christchurch for the last eight or nine years. Mrs Hewitt leaves a daughter, Mrs E. D. Mosley, and a son. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt. S.M.
