DELIGHTFUL STORY.

L. M. Montgomery’s “ Anne

of Green Gables.”

All the appeal of L. M. Montgomery’s well-known novel, “ Anne of Green Gables,” has been captured in the P.KO-Radio film version, which heads the current programme at the Mayfair Theatre. The picture follows the book fairly accurately and seldom has the charm of familiar things been presented so well on the screen. The production is similar in type to “ Little Women," which was ranked among the ten best pictures of 1934. The story' tells how Anne Shirley, an orphan girl, is by error sent from an orphanage to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who desired to adopt a boy. The winsome attractiveness of the girl wins over first the man and then his sister, and their original plan to place the girl elsewhere is dropped. This adaptation of L. M. Montgomery’s favourite story is marked by that same homely sentiment which was one of the most attractive features of the book. Anne Shirley, who has adopted the name of the heroine, gives a sensitive and appealing performance as the naive orphan girl. This sixteen-year-old actress does not act her part, she lives it. The producers have shown great judgment in allotting her the principal role. The supporting players are excellently chosen, Helen Westley as Marilla and O. P. Ileggie as Matthew being particularly good. The supporting items are first class.
