BUILDING WORK.

Unemployment Board to Make Survey. CO-OPERATION SOUGHT. With a view to gaining some idea of the public and semi-public buildings which are likely to be built during the next two years, the Unemployment Board is conducting a survey, and the assistance of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) has been sought by it in the matter. The letter ir om the board states that the board desires to review the probable building operations that may eventuate within the next two years in regard to all buildings or structures required by various institutions, public or semi-public bodies operating on a non-profit-earning basis, inclusive of all churches. Sunday schools, public halls and libraries, charitable institutions, buildings for A. and P. associations, and any other buildings in the same category.

The board was soliciting the co-oper-ation of all local authorities, and asked if the Mayor would arrange for any persons or bodies concerned to communicate with it, supplying the following information in connection with any building operations of the above nature that may be contemplated, giving the order of necessity where more than one building is proposed:— (1) The date it is anticipated that the work could be commenced; (2) The estimated cost of the work; (3) The amount of money available for the purpose; and

(4) Where the whole of the necessary finance is not in hand, the prospects of raising the deficiency, and the time it is considered this will take.

“It will be appreciated that all building operations have a far-reaching effect in providing employment, and the Unemployment Board will be grateful for any detailed information which can be furnished, so that it will be able to gauge the extent of employment likely to be created by works of the nature mentioned above,” concludes the letter.
