MINISTERIAL. The Hon Adam Hamilton. Postmas-ter-General and Acting Minister of Finance, who has been paying a brief visit to Invercargill, will pass through Christchurch this evening on his return to Wellington. The Hon J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence, was present at the official test of Vildebeest bomber aircraft at the Hobsonville air base yesterday. In the afternoon the Minister presided at a conference on defence administration held between the General Officer commanding the New Zealand defence forces, Major-General Sir William Sin-clair-Burgess, the Commodore commanding the New Zealand Divsion of the Royal Navy, Captain the Hon E. R. Drummond, and executive officers of the Defence and Naval Departments. Mr Cobbe will leave Auckland for Wellington by the Limited express to-day.
Mr A. L. Curry, chief announcer at radio station 3YA, will commence his annual leave to-day. Sir James Grose, general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, was a passenger from the north by this morning’s inter-Is.land steamer. Messrs M. Burrow’s (Sydney). I. R. Mann (Melbourne) and D. L. Rutherford are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Mr F. 11. Sandall has undertaken to act as interim secretary of the Canterbury and Westland branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society.
Guests at the Royal Hotel include Messrs R. N. Hughes (Invercargill), W. N. Abbott (Wellington) and J. A. Lewis (Auckland).
Mr W. G. V. Fernie, general manager of the Calder Mackay Company, Ltd., is at present on a business visit to Dunedin.
Mr A. W. Beaven, the “ father ” of the Christchurch Rotary Club, who celebrated a birthday yesterday, was congratulated at a club luncheon by the sergeant-at-arms. Mr 11. B. Duckworth.
Mr P. J. McLean was re-elected chairman of the Greymouth Harbour Board for his eighth successive term, and Mr G. E. Perkins was re-appointed deputy-chairman, at the annual meeting of the board last evening. It was decided at the meeting of the Canterbury Football Association last evening to extend thanks to Dr P. Gupta, of the Indian hockey team, for the able manner in which he had refereed the soccer match at English Park on Saturday.
Guests at the New’ City Hotel include Messrs V. W. Tipler (Brisbane). C. E. R. Webber (Auckland), L. A. Williams (Wellington), C. M. C. Wilson (Waiau), F. W. Gifkins (Mount Somers) and J. D. Hutchinson (Little River).
Guests at the Clarendon Hotel include Messrs J. C. Young (Palmerston North), J. O. Symington, H. Brook and Leslie C. Rossiter (Wellington). Messrs J. W. O. Chalmers (Liberton. Edinburgh), F. W. Menzies (Hastings) and W. Russell (Wellington) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr C. W. Adams, of Greendale, who, for the last three years, has been chairman of the Malvern County Council, was again successful in the election for chairman yesterday after noon. Mr Adams, w’ho is a son of Mr T. W. Adams, one of the pioneers of the district, has been on the council for many years. He is a member of the No. 14 District Highways Council and a member of the Selwyn Plantations Board.
