CYCLE TRACK PLANNED

Improvement Proposed at New Brighton. A meeting was held at New Brighton last evening for the purpose of discussing a proposal to place before the New Brighton Council the question of the formation of a cycling track and the carrying out of sports ground improvements. Mr A. E. Higgins presided. The New’ Brighton Amateur Athletic Club wrote, stating that the council had always given it the greatest consideration and it was prepared to support any proposal for the interest of the borough. After a lengthy discussion Mr A. E. McKaskell moved that two delegates be appointed to approach the council with full details of the propositions discussed. The motion was carried.

It was decided that an improvement to tire sports ground by the combina tion of a running and banked cycling track, each skirting the football field, w'ould not only be an asset to the borough, but would provide one of the finest sports grounds in Canterbury. In addition it w*as considered that it would provide a great necessity, as at the present time w’hile the athletes were provided for. there was no ground in Christchurch, where a complete sports programme could be held, and cyclists had to travel to country meetings to compete in track races.

Should the council decide to improve the grounds as proposed it would be possible to hold regular combined sports meetings, provide a much closer fellowship among the governing bodies and assist to popularise the borough. The sports bodies represented decided that, as those councillors approached were agreeable to assist any sound proposals submitted for the improvement of the borough, that they w’ere prepared to assist in every possible way. Messrs W. J. Palmer and F. Ockwell were appointed to wait on the council.
