BRIGHTON UNEMPLOYED.

May Get Concessions Under New Scheme. As the result of a conference held recently to consider the finding of suitable work for the unemployed, a report was presented to last night’s meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council by the chairman of works • Councillor J. S. Ainsworth) concerning work available in the borough. Councillor Ainsworth said that before preparing his report he had lseen in communication with the secretary of the Unemployment Board (Mr li. C. Ridler) and the report would therefore be more valuable to the council. Mr Ridler had also promised his support in obtaining certain concessions for the No. 5 men in New Brighton. The suggestions embodied in the report were divided into two sections, constructional work and subsidised reconstructional work, on which married men could be employed. About 258 men would be required, but not all at one time. Concessions Suggested.

The concessions suggested were that men residing in the borough, but em ployed outside it, would have the right to apply for a transfer to work within the borough, and that men at present on sustenance might apply for transfer to work in the borough. The Mayor (Mr E. L. Smith) said that the matter had some bearing on the estimates, and the council should know’ the approximate cost before the report went to the Unemployment Board.

Councillor J. K. Worrall said he thought that the council should find out if the board would endorse the policy before Wasting time going into the cost. Unless the chairman of works could give an assurance that the work could be carried out within the next twelve months at small financial outlay. he would move that the town clerk, with the chairman of the works committee, should draft a letter to the board asking approval of the policy of employing No. 5 men on constructional and subsidised work. It was pointed out that the council might not be in a position to go ahead with the work suggested, but Councillor Ainsworth said that the council would not be committed in any way by the report. Councillor C. V. Lester moved as an amendment that a copy of the report should accompany the letter to the board. The amendment was carried.
