Whether or not the body of a young woman found under the Panmure wharf on Sunday is that of Mary Elizabeth Raymond, a half-caste Maori, aged 21, has not yet been established by the detectives who are inquiring into the Panmure mystery. Miss Raymond has been missing since May 1, and although her disappearance was not reported officially to the police until Monday, relatives and friends, assisted by a legal adviser, have carried out a search for the pretty Maori girl for the past three weeks.

Many advertisements have appeared in the personal columns if the “ Star * from May 7 to May 20. Known friends have been questioned by relatives, and urgent appeals to discover her whereabouts have been contained in newspaper advertisements. Where Are You?

The first advertisement believed to be connected with the missing girl appeared on May 7 in the “ Star.” It stated: “ Mary, where are you ? Let us know. Anxious. Alice.” This advertisement was published on the two following days There was no answer. A couple of days later another advertisement read: “ Mary: Letters at G.P.O. I am waiting at Peggy’s. Love. Bennett.”

Never at any time did ananswer come to th e appeal of the relatives. If the dead girl found in the Tamaki River last Sunday is not Mary Raymond, where is she?

For three weeks before the discovery of the young woman’s body, which still lies in the morgue, the relatives of Mary Roymond, advised always by a well-known city solicitor, carried out an intensive search, as the girl had not been since May 1. It is known that Mary Raymond was in love with a Maori of high standing and he was in love with her. The Maori boy is believed to be about 23 or 24 years of age, and to come recently from Wellington. It is stated that a wedding had been arranged for last Easter but lack of money caused a postponment of the ceremony.
