j XTOMINATIONS for the Ashburton 1 Trotting Club’s winter meeting will close to-day, at 8 p.m. j *■ * * * j The final forfeit for the New Zeai land Sapling Stakes is due with the Ashburton Trotting Club to-day, at p,m. *❖* ❖ . I A second, forfeit iia connection with I the New Zealand Champion Stakes, j 1935, must be declared with the secreI tarv of the Ashburton Trotting Club j not later than to-day. at 8 p m. * sje * * 1 Acceptances for the first day of the , Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter j meeting will close to-morrow, at noon. ! MATINEE MEETING. • Provided the weather conditions conj tinue favourable, the matinee meeting arranged for Thursday last and postponed owing to rain, will be held tomorrow at the Addington trotting course, commencing at 1.45 p.m. The same programme will be carried out. Horses previously nominated will takfe' part in the heats already advertised. Drivers will wear white trousers and colours just as at last meeting held under the auspices of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association, * =;= * The aged pacing mare Dusolina has joined L. Davidson’s stable at New Brighton. She is. engaged in sprint events at the Canterbury Park Trotting Chib’s meeting. AN INQUIRY, There was a mix up in the Opihi Handicap, at the South Cantrebury Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. The field was in fairly close order going along the back, with about half the journey gone, when Bluff stumbled and fell. Colonel Bogey, Self. Llewellyn’s Pet. and Sky Wink were also brought down, while several other ' horses had their prospects extinguished in the melee. An inquiry was, held into the incident. The decision of the I Judicial Committee was that, in view of the conflicting evidence it was ; unable to take any action, but the committee viewed with suspicion the driving of L. Frost (Tricliff) and P. Gallagher (Royal Palm) at the time of the accident. \ Dtc APPOINTING NOVICE Kia Kaha is proving an expensive proposition to his owner, R. A. McMillan, and the grey gelding is not racing at all generously. Kia Kaha was proj duced twice at the Cambridge meeting, but after being up in th" lead in , the early stages on both occasions he I faded out when the pressure was ap--1 plied. Kia Kaha possesses a great turn of speed for a novice, but until he shows a little more stamina at the end !of ' rac she cannot be recommended as a betting proposition. TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER. I The Beaconsfield Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, attracted a large field, six of them being two-year-olds. Among them was j Gaillard, who earned the distinction of being the first winner among the juveniles in the South Island this season, j Starting from the rails, he went off smoothly, though not very fast, and there were about ten horses in front jof him at the end of a furlong. He I was hunted along in the back stretch, , where he improved his position gradu- > ally, and, responding to hard driving, ! he was just behind the front bunch at the home turn. He followed Cadiz and Colonel Bogey to the straight, heading them off. under punishment, to win impressively. It was a good performance, in which the colt showed great gameness, as well as speed. Gaillard, who was driven by his trainer, ! F. G. Holmes, represents a cross that I has produced many successful pacers, j being by Rey de Oro from Bonny j Logan, a high-class sprinter in her I day. !NEVER BETTER. . j Wild Guy is bouncing along in his work, and on Tuesday at New Brighton : j he was very busy going a mile and a I half. lie is carrying plenty of condiJ tion. and is in splendid order for apI proachring meetings. Wild Guy is one : j of the most improved horses this sea- ; | son. and at present he gives an imi pression that he is better than when he appeared in the autumn. ; PREPARING FOR MATCH RACE. The Claudelands trotting trainer. C 1 | Moran, is keeping Impromptu up to his i work in case anything comes of the ! J suggested match with the crack fivei , vear-old Indianapolis, states the “Auckland Herald.” There is no doubt that ,1 in his present condition Impromptu I would prove a worthv rival for the southerner. He displayed rare speed in ' | his matches -with Harold Logan at [ ; Wanganui and Hawera. and his victor- > ies were the more meritorious as on ! each occasion he was conceding from 1 three to five lengths’ start. However. 1 without detracting from the merit of . his performances, it is safe to say that no horse in the world would have given Harold Logan any start twelve months , ago. and he was evidently not the same ! horse on this circuit. In a race with J Indianapolis, Impromptu would pro- ; bablv not be at such a disadvantage, ; as his opponent is not ijearly as smart out of the barrier as is Harold Logan To ensure a real test of speed between Impromptu and Indianapolis, and to : 1 give more satisfaction to the owners • and public alike, a moving-up start ! would be of advantage. i A SOLID PERFORMER. Rare Rey registered two solid peifirmances at the Cambridge meeting, lie contested the Hautapu Handicap on the opening day, and after leading all the way finished too solidly for his opponents, to score convincingly by a length. Penalised 24yds for the success, Rare Rey started off 36yds in the Windsor Handicap on the second day, but on this occasion a slow beginning made his task much harder, and he never looked like catching Winaway. who had been in charge from karri r rise. Rare Rey is a fairly consistent pacer and he has not reached the end cf his winning record yet. I He stays on well for an improver, and | next season should see him racing to j advantage over two miles. I TB O T 'l' TNG FlXTl’l? US, June 1. 3—Canterbury Park T.C.
