DRUG TRAFFICKERS.

Operations in Territory in North China. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 15, 12.45 p.m.) PEKIN, May 14. “ I am convinced that a large slice of North China, an approximate area of 8000 square miles, is being honeycombed by Japanese and Korean dope pedlars, and there appears to be a grave danger that the social and economic fabric of the whole region, with a population of 6,000,000, will be steadily undermined.” This conclusion was expressed to the “ Sun-Herald ” by Miss Muriel Lester, a well-known British social worker, on her return to Pekin from a tour of investigation in the so-called demilitarised zone—a strip of territory just southward of the Great Wall of China, extending from the sea coast twenty miles northward to Tientsin and westward to the borders of inner Mongolia. Miss Lester described as appalling the conditions in one country, where 163 Japanese and Korean establishments were openl}' and illegally trafficking in opium, morphine and heroin.
