COUPON SYSTEM.

Mayor Claims He Advocated It Months Ago. Attention was drawn this morning by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) to the. fact that the Citizens’ Association candidates had declared their intention of instituting the coupon system for relief of distress, while, within recent months, the Citizens’ Association members on the Metropolitan Relief Association had rejected his own suggestion that this system should be adopted. The Mayor said that, in view of the fact that the Citizens’ Association already had a majority on the Metropolitan Relief Association, he wondered why steps had not already been taken to reorganise the system as advocated by the candidates, if this was necessary. The Citizens’ Association advertisement advocating the coupon system was rather a sore point with the speaker because he had advocated the coupon system, but the Relief Association had not seen fit to adopt it.

“If the Citizens’ Association candidates have already been in contact with the Relief Association and have secured a promise from them to adopt the coupon system, well and good,” said the Mayor, “ but they have no right to endeavour to score off the Mayor in this manner when it was their own people who consistently opposed the introduction of the coupon system on the Metropolitan Relief Association.”
