Berberis Wilsoni.

A Garden Corner.

JF I were asked my preference for the best berry-bearing shrub for this district I would consider very seriously before passing over the Berberis Wilsoni for the position. It combines all the attributes of grace and charm required, and is dwarf enough for any position. This barberry was sent Home from China by Dr Wilson, a collector for Kew Gardens, who also discovered the popular Lilium Regale.

It makes a circular bush of about 6ft high and through, and gives plenty of long sprays that are ideal for cutting. When in berry, the whole bush is literally festooned with small coral red berries that show various pink shadings. Sprays have been much in evidence at autumn shows recently and nothing else is so colourful and effective in finishing off an exhibit. True, the plant is very prickly, but that is an advantage in preventing a ruthless breaking of branches. Gloves and secateurs are required and a neater job can be made. It is a very hardy shrub. T. D. LENNIE.
