Radio Servicing.
Dear Sir, —Your correspondent, “ Doubt* ful,” asks if it is necessary for a radio serviceman to have any special tions. Anybody can make or service a radio set. There are many firms in New Zealand making and using power transformers without any qualifications being required. There is a proviso in the Wiring Regulations stating that “ these regulations shall not apply to the secondary side of a power transformer.” The power supply authorities must be notified in all cases—• that is, according to the regulations. A prosecution failed in Christchurch for plugging in a set without first notifying the authorities.
The matter is difficult as it is obviously ridiculous to prohibit the plugging in of electric irons, stoves, heaters, fans, soldering irons, beaters, cake mixers, etc. Imagine a housewife ringing up the supply people to come and plug in the iron. Yet an iron has a much greater electrical hazard than a radio set. To enforce the regulations would be to put thousands of pounds of kit-sets out of the market, and hundreds of good men out of a job, and to force many dealers into the Bankruptcy Court, so, like Brer Rabbit, the New Zealand Government is wisely lying low and saying “ nuffin.”—l am, etc., XMITTER.
