Governor-General Meets Residents. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, May 1. A number of residents assembled at the Ashburton Railway Station this morning when the express carrying the Governor-General (Lord Galway) and Lady Galway passed through. The Governor-General and Lady Galway shook hands with many, and both expressed pleasure at the opportunity of meeting some of the residents of Ashburton. An invitation was extended to Lady Galway by Mrs Curtis (president of the Mid-Canterburv Federation of Women’s Institutes) and Mrs E. W. Begg (president of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union) to visit Ashburton during her next stay in Christchurch and it was accepted by her Excellency. On behalf of the federation Mrs Curtis presented Lady Galway with a bouquet of roses. Acclimatisation Society, The monthly meeting of the council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, when Mr A. O. Pilbrow (chairman) presided. The chairman reported that the new hatchery building was nearing completion, and it was expected to have everything in order for hatching this winter. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote, advising that the Government was making a contribution of £2OOO towards opossum ranging and fresh water fish research work. Of this sum £SOO was being allotted to the latter work. The secretary presented the statement of receipts and expenditure, which disclosed a credit balance of £l9B 9s 9d, as against £B6 3s lid at the commencement of the year. Rainfall in April.
The rainfall for the month of April was 2.37 inches, which is the heaviest recorded during this period of the vear since 1932. Last year the fall was *1.48 inches Eight frosts were recorded last month, the heaviest, 6.8 degrees, being experienced on April 14. Judges Appointed.
A meeting of the General Committee of the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society was held last evening, Mr G. H. Nicoll presiding. Judges for the Winter Show were appointed as under:—Potatoes, roots and vegetables, Messrs G. and A. Clark; grain and seeds, Mr D. Lawson; cookery and preserves, Mrs G. B. Murdoch: butter, Mr E. Keig; needlework, Mrs D. G. Smith; marquetry and artificial flowers, Mrs E. Reynolds; school competitions, Mr J. Cook; photography, Mr E. J. Daniel; dogs. Mr G. Biltcliff; working dogs, Mr T. Drennan; poultry, Mr F. G. Hansen (Dunedin) ; pigeons, Dr A. C. M’Killop; canaries, Mr R. W. Thompson; cats and rabbits, Mr G. Radford. Minister Fafewelled. A social was held last evening by parishioners of the Tinwald Anglican Church to bid farewell to the Rev Duncan Rankin, who left Ashburton to-day to live in retirement at Tauranga. On behalf of the parish and all sections of the church, Mr R. D. Robinson (vicar’s warden) presented Mr and Mrs Rankin with a cheque. Personal. Mr R. A. Collins has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Ashburton Permanent Building and Investment Society in place of Mr F. W. Watt, who has been indisposed for some time. Mr E. F. Nicoll has been elected deputy-chairman.
