TRUCK DERAILED.
Goods Train From West Coast Delayed.
The derailment near Arthur’s Pass of a truck loaded with slack coal caused a delay of nearly two hours in the arrival at Christchurch of the goods train from Grey mouth this morning. The derailment was caused through an axle breaking, but no damage was done to other waggons comprising the train or to the track.
The breaking of the axle is believed to have occurred while the train was running on a comparatively level grade. The couplings held the truck in place until a climb was commenced, when it w-as noticed that something was amiss. The train was not travelling at any speed at the time and was easily brought to- a stop. An inspection revealed the broken axle and the derailed truck.
The engine crew and the guard then had to adopt the role of coal-heavers in order to lighten the truck of its load of coal and to push it clear of the track. In two hours they were able to couple the train together again and resume the journey to Christchurch.
