SHORTAGE OF TREES.
Supplies to Local Bodies Restricted. “ There will probably be 280,000 trees in the nursery sufficiently advanced for permanent planting; but as much replanting work is necessary this season it would be to the board’s advantage to make use of all trees available and curtail the distribution work this year,” said Mr R. G. Robinson, superintendent, at to-day’s meeting of the Selwyn Plantation Board. A member: Does that mean that there are no trees available for local bodies ? Mr Robinson: We rteed some 350,000 trees to replace those which we have lost by weather and other causes and every available tree is needed for our Mr W. P. Spencer: Do I understand that there will be no trees available for domains? And what about the schools ? During the subsequent discussion it was explained that it was probable that some trees would be available for the schools; but there would be a difficulty where domains were concerned. It was finally decided that in view of the shortage of trees no local bodies should be supplied with trees this year, an exception to be made with respect to schools. It was later decided to have 10,000 trees planted during the coming season.
