EASTER PRE-VIEW.

Autumn Fashions Make Their Debut. STYLES WORN AT THE TROTS. A pre-view of Easter form, both from a fashion and racing point of view was provided at Addington today, when the Easter racing carnival opened with the first day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting. With the real holiday spirit in the air there was a large crowd present at the trots, an excellent day’s sport being provided. The fashions, too, were definitely interesting. Tweeds, in suits or tailored frocks, were first favourites. Nearly all still cultivated a rough appearance, and were striped, checked or flecked with apparently endles ingenuity. Shortlength coats seemed to have ousted the seven-eights variety in popular favour. Tweed frocks, too, had their devotees, and combined smartness with suitability. Furs, and fur necklets were also added to their ensembles by many women to guard against a change in the weather. Their caution was unnecessary, however, for a mellow autumn day favoured the meeting. New styles notes to be gleaned today included slit skirts, large buttons used as trimmings, gaily patterned wool jumpers and scarves with tailored suits in one colour, and everywhere feather trimmings on hats. Hats were a study on their own account. Tricorne hats, draped berets, little swathed turbans, high crowns, crowns so shallow as to be almost nonexistent, jostled one another in the crowd. Folded crowns were prevalent on the more tailored felts. Lunching with Mrs J. H. Williams, wife of the president, and Mrs C. M. Ollivier, wife of the vice-president, at the official table, were the Hon and Mrs William Hayward, Mr and Mrs J. R. M’Kenzie, Mr and Mrs S. W. Kelly (Wellington), Messrs H. F. Nicoll (president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference), and W. H. Price and Falla, of Wellington. Mrs Williams wore a concord blue tweed coat over a blue and beige patterned frock.
