No Exploitation of Sydney Consumers.
United Press Assn. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 18. gIR HERBERT GEPP, who recently inquired into the price of bread in the metropolitan area, has submitted a report to the Government which discloses that there is no exploitation of the consumers by bakers. Sir Herbert emphasised that the bread-baking industry in recent years had been subjected to the fiercest competition and to embarrassing variations in the price of flour, due mainly to tax levies. Based on the present price of flour, £lO 17s 6d a ton, the average cost of manufacture and distribution of a 21b loaf is 4.471 d and the average profit is 0.063 d. The price at which bread is being sold over the counter varies from 3id to 4sd a 21b loaf, while delivered it varied from 3id to 6d. There are approximately 400 bakery establishments in the metropolis using 90,000 tons of flour annually, producing 120,000,000 21b loaves of bread and providing work directly for about 3000 employees. Sir Herbert recommends the fixation of the price of bread in accordance with the rise and fall of flour by means of a formula provided in his report.
