Burglar Fails to Open Safes.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 18. THE SAFE of the railway station and the strongroom of the borough council were blown with gelignite by a burglar or burglars who entered the premises at Upper Hutt on Sunday night or early this morning. In both cases, the doors jammed owing to an overdose of gelignite being used and the total haul amounted to about 10s in stamps and money, which were stolen from the council office.
Had the burglar managed to open the railway safe he would have found no money, but the strongroom at the other building, which is only about 200 yards away, contained a fairly substantial sum. The first intimation of the burglary was when the premises were opened by the staffs this morning.
