ASHBURTON NEWS.

Meeting of Borough

Council,

(Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, March 18. The Ashburton Borough Council met to-night, when the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presided. The Ashburton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was granted permission to take up a street collection on Thursday, April 17, in connection with the annual sale of poppies. Permission was also granted for the holding of short services at the Cenotaph, the South African War Memorial, the cemetery and the Hampstead Memorial Gates, on Anzac Day, April 25. The association was granted further permission to take up a collection at the entrances to the Domain oval in connection with the main service on Anzac Day. The Ashburton Committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association reported that several cars had met with mishaps at the termination of the south end of Tancred Street. It was explained that the vacant section facing the end of Tancred Street was the same width as the street, and with two houses on either side gave motorists the impression, especially on wet or misty nights, that it was a continuation of Tancred Street. The committee agreed to supply a triangular danger sign or a white rail, providing the council would attend to the erection. The committee also referred to complaints by motorists regarding the number of cyclists who had no reflectors on their bicycles, and it was suggested that the by-law in operation in other centres, compelling cyclists to have their mudguards painted white, would greatly minimise the danger of accident. The erection of the “dangerous” sign was left to the Lighting Committee with power to act. and it was agreed to refer the question of the painting of rear mudguards of cycles to the By-laws Committee. Mr T. Pheloung’s tender for the second coat of tar-sealing on Havelock Street was accepted. Mr E. Buchanan referred to the length of time some residents allowed rubbish from their properties to lie on the streets. It was stated that if complaints were made to the borough inspector they would be attended to.
