WHOOPING COUGH.
Hanmer School Forced to Close Down.
MANY PUPILS AFFECTED. Twenty-three of the thirty-nine pupils attending the Hanmer School have been stricken with whoopingcough. and on the advice of medical men in the district it has been decided by the Canterbury Education Board to close the school for a fortnight. In making this announcement this morning the secretary of the board (Mr L. E. Rowley) said that he had had no reports of other schools in the board’s district being affected with whooping cough, and the general health of school children at the moment appeared to be good.
Schools in the Canterbury district have been affected considerably during the past twelve months by various complaints. Early last year few schools escaped having to close their doors for varying periods, owing to an epidemic of measles. Later attendances suffered as a result of influenza.
