CONGREGATIONAL UNION.

Mr J. Abernethy presided at the meeting of the Congregational Union Assembly last evening. The Rev H- \\ . Newell gave an address entitled. Why a Church at All 7” He said that the world was seeking for unity of thought and purpose. If civilisation was to exist all must seek for international unity. The old terror which had obsessed people in the past was still gripping them. The fear of war was ever with them. All nations were preaching a doctrine of pacifism, and it required a spirit of unity to carry this desire Into effect. The Church was useful to mankind, and through its good offices humanity was enabled to make a stand against malign influences. The Church one body and one spirit, and this combination was fruitful of the best results. In the deepest and truest sense religion was not a controversial subject. It was a belief or a gift of unity. The Church was the voice of God calling us away from the things that were trivial to the things that were worth while. The views of the Church embodied the spirit of unity and endeavoured to inculcate that in the mind of the people. The Church was God s gift In times r»r desperate need and was a means to obtain comfort through the unity of the spirit and body.
